hola, peru.

i look to my left and see a golden-retriever-sized turkey sitting on the neighbor's roof, amidst piles of firewood and hanging laundry.
the rain lightly falls as i sit out on my host family's roof and look out over the town..
at the group of neighborhood ladies playing volleyball, the mototaxis swerving through the crooked streets, and the street vendors selling grilled meat from their colorful stalls.
and just beyond the edge of the neighborhood lies the andes.

the andes mountains, you guys! incredible.
i am living in an entirely new world down here in south america.
it is all so new and exciting, beautiful and petrifying at the same time.

i am so happy to be here.
despite the ice cold showers and mosquito bites and serious lack of gluten-free food,
i am happy.

after a few tiresome days of traveling,
the other intern, anna, and i met our niños yesterday at el bichito (the at-risk youth center we're working at in a rural community outside cajamarca),
and from the moment we saw just a few of their precious little smiling faces,
we knew that this is going to be great.
